Can Fetuses Expirience Pain?

The Royal College of Obstetricians & Gynecologists  & The American College of Obstetricians & Gynecologists  both agree that a fetus cannot experience pain until after 24 weeks — citing evidence that before 24 weeks, the periphery and the cortex, which are necessary for conscious pain perception, are not yet connected.

While some scientists believe that fetal sentience can begin developing at 18-25 weeks, it’s accepted that this is still an immature stage of sentience. EGG activity is still extremely limited before 30 weeks, which is a more plausible stage for the lower boundary of fetal development.

The UNHRC and other UN treaty bodies recognize that denial and criminalization of safe abortions violates human nondiscrimination rights and equality.

Abortions are safe and restricting access to them doesn’t lower the number of abortions, but rather increases the number of unsafe ones.

The risk of pregnancy related death is believed to be at least 44 times higher than the risk of abortion related death.

Only 2% of women who undergo abortions experience a complication, and most complications are minor and easily treatable.
